The LHC is using KDE
by Lennart on Sep.10, 2008, under *NIX
I just read that the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that started it first “live” runs today is using KDE for at least some parts of the projects software. This screenshot of a KDE at CERN/LHC looks like a monitoring program (with a knote
):

I think this is a great prove for stability and flexibility of free software. I mean… The “biggest experiment of all times” seems to use KDE to at least monitor the systems. It is highly presumable that other parts of the LHC systems are using KDE, too.
Do you have other screenshots of the LHC experiment? Comments are welcome!
Check out kde.org and the blog of Aaron Seigo (the KDE hacker I got the information from)

I found some more interesting images:

The majority of machines at CERN run on Scientific Linux, including the entirety of the GRID. SL is based on Enterprise Linux and developed primarily by CERN and Fermi Lab in the US.

Figures the largest experiment in the world would go with KDE’s bloat…
Heh. Bury me hard all ye KDE nuts, for the only way you’re taking away my Fluxbox is from cold, dead fingers.

just wonder…why didn’t they use VISTA….seinfield would applaud it. lol

Vista is not acceptable because it is not open source project and may contain hostile u.s code. As far as i know no major European Union project uses Windows. So, it doesn’t mean Vista is bad (ok, it is), it means we simply do not trust you.

Well anyway, you wouldnt want a BSOD to pop up just when the particles are about to collide, ye know
September 11th, 2008 on 5:49 pm
No offenses! I’m not a Windows user & I’m not North American! I wouldn’t use vista if MS paid for it!! Kidding though, I’m glad that the Linux community keep the teeth sharp
September 12th, 2008 on 7:50 am
Well. I wouldn’t trust a Windows OS to turn on my automatic sprinklers. Let alone trust the fate of the world to it!
September 12th, 2008 on 2:11 pm
@Arkay – I did exactly that! and it indeed Blue screened. I came home from work to find my yard very wet.. very….
Replaced it with linux and it’s been sitting there working for over 8 years.

> . . . KDE bloat . . .
Hey, one man’s “bloat” is another man’s “features”.
Do you suppose all the code in KDE actually DOES something? (ie, has some purpose)
September 15th, 2008 on 12:05 pm
anybody bothered to notice that the CERN website is running IIS?
September 17th, 2008 on 4:59 pm
based on my personal experience, if they’re using KDE4, we’re all doomed.
October 8th, 2008 on 4:04 pm
I work at CERN and can tell you that most applications for LHC are written in Java, since it in principle is multiplatform. As an operative system, windows is also available (xp of course, still haven’t seen vista on a CERN computer), but in the control room (CCC) I believe that most if not all computers run Scientific Linux CERN (version 4.5). This is though a quite old version of KDE though, I think it is 3.3.1. Link: http://linux.web.cern.ch/linux/scientific4/
